COMPRESSED AIR PIPING – WHAT IS THE BEST CHOICE?

There are several materials that you can choose from when deciding on the compressed air piping to use in your workshop. Some of the materials that you can use include PVC, copper, hoses, black pipe, rubber and many others. However, all the materials have their advantages and disadvantages. The black pope usually comes in 20’, 10’ and nipple lengths. You can get this from the local plumbing store. They are better quality compared to what you get in the local home supply store. The downside of the black pipe is rust and water. However, there is so much that you can do with the compressed air. The problem is that the moisture in the air is deposited in the compressed air piping. As time progresses, rust will form inside this system. The rust will then weaken the wall. In addition to that, the compressor tank will also start rusting almost the same time as the piping. It is recommended that you install a tee before it gets to the horizontal run. The legs of the tee should point downwards to trap debris and act as water drain. The black pipe will also require a lot of your time and effort to install. You will have to cut and thread the pipes. This can be done before hand or at the store. You might have to rent a pipe threader to do the work.
You can also use copper in your compressed air piping. This is because it is easier to install than the black pipe and will not rust. It is able to contain the pressure in most of the air compressor systems. In case the copper piping fails, it will fatigue and bulge outwards instead of bursting. The type L and K are the best for compressed air systems and not type M. The type M is the one used in most homes for fresh water supply systems. The PVC pipe is very attractive and can also be used in air compressor systems. It is easy to install and is not affected by rust. The main problem with it is that when it ruptures it will send sharp plastic materials flying, which might injure a person seriously. This compressed air piping is not suitable especially in areas inhabited by children. There are many more materials that you can use. However, make sure that you have research extensively on the benefits and risks of using each individual material before you make your decision.
